March 30th Sheephead drive

April 2, 2006

Today I fished the morning with my longtime friend David and his dad. David is one of the old pier fishermen from the 60’s and 70’s. We did alot of walking down memory lane (pier) while fishing today.

Below is one of many sheephead we had hooked up during the day.

For some reason I did not get any more fish pictures but just let me say we had a box full of sheephead.

I picked up Terry and Frank for a quick afternoon trip. On our first drift Frank caught this nice sheephead.

Frank was pouring it on his dad all day. One sheephead after another.

March 29th an afternoon bite

My afternoon trip was with Mark, Nick and Debbie. Their goal was to catch fish! The weather continued to be beautiful.

We were loaded with shrimp for bait.

After a slow start the tide began to slow down and Nick was hooked up on a huge sheephead. The sheephead had very nice black/white stripes and showed us why they are called convict fish. The smile on Nick’s face says it all!

Debbie was filming and picture taking most of the day but managed to boat her first sheephead ever.

Mark spent most of his day hooking fish and passing over to the mighty angler Nick. On this fish Nick told his dad to fight the fish himself. Mark had a big smile as he battled this pompano down.

Mark is one of those dads that you are very proud to be with. He wanted this day to be Nick’s day and he helped Nick catch many fish.

We ended the day by watching the sun slowly set into the horizon. A beautiful for father and son as mother watched!

March 29th my friends from Wisconsin

Today I had the pleasure of fishing with two of my great friends from Wisconsin. Brad and Trevor. I started fishing with Brad and Trevor when Trevor was only 7 years old. Now he has turned into a very nice young man at 13 years of age.

The weather was beautiful and we had our sites on a pompano and redfish. Out first stop was the Ft Pickens pier. We had pink and yellow pomp jigs on and our retrieve was a quick short twitch of the rod as the jig bounced off the bottom.

It did not take long and Brad connected on a couple of nice pomps as you can see in the smile on his face!

Trevor would not be denied as he had a huge strike and he was on! After several surges back to the bottom Trevor pulled up this monster sheephead! Although not a pompano Trevor was very glad to have boated this nice fish.

We kept fishing hard and then came the moment Trevor had been waiting for. Wham bam!
The fight was on. The fish came to the top in hopes of shaking the hook but Trevor would not be denied today! A nice pompano that any angler would be proud of.

After boating several pompano and sheephead we decided to try the redfish. We started our trolling around the number 15 bouy and moved toward the number 13 bouy. We were trolling a S25 (dolphin pattern) and a 1 1/4 oz jig. Brad had a big hit and set the hook. After 30 seconds of fight the fish released the hooks only to leave a scale on the hook.

We ended the day in high sprits even though we were not able to boat that BIG redfish.

Our stringer below:

A great day with great friends.

Next year we will have a new fisherman with us her name is Molly and I look forward to seeing her first catch and watching her grow up to be a young lady.
